Drought-tolerant landscaping, also known as xeriscaping, has become increasingly popular in areas that experience little or sporadic rainfall. The popularity and necessity of these types of installations continues to grow as some regions or cities may receive such little rainfall that water usage is restricted by local ordinances or state laws. In areas such as these a well thought out, drought tolerant landscape plan will stay healthy and attractive while contributing to the water conservation efforts of the community.
Elements of a Drought Tolerant Landscape Design
A great drought tolerant landscape design will usually include aesthetic usage of gravel, river stones, and permeable paving in conjunction with grass, shrubs, trees, and perennials that can live for long periods without irrigation. Although grass can be included, usage is usually kept to a minimum, and grasses that do well in arid conditions such as Zoysia or Bermuda are recommended. The top choices for decorative plants are those that are native to our area and thrived here before modern irrigation was introduced. This includes a surprisingly wide variety of drought resistant plants and succulents.
